All Systems Go for Malawi

ABCD is all set and ready to go for the very first ABCD project at the All Angel’s Primary School in Senga Bay on the shores of Lake Malawi.

As with all ABCD projects, strong partnerships will lay the foundation for the project. In this case we have the Rotary Club of Montrose as the sponsor club in Australia, partnering with the Rotary Club of Lilongwe in Malawi to ensure the funds are both raised and spent in the proper way.  Refurbishment work on the Primary School will be carried out by teams of local volunteers supported by Rotary and ABCD volunteers from Australia, plus of course the now familiar partnership with the Deakin University Global Citizenship Program (GCP) volunteer students. This will be the FIFTH TIME that the GCP students have been a key feature of an ABCD project in  a developing country.

For the first time we will also be partnering with another outstanding organisation, Days For Girls (DFG). The ABCD Project team will be using DFG methods and patterns to set up a workshop to manufacture locally the DFG feminine hygiene kits and to run sewing workshops to create a sustainable supply and of course increase local sewing and manufacturing skills.  We are hoping this can lead to the manufacture of school uniforms at a later date which will have a further impact on reducing the cost of education.

As far as building work is concerned, our plans in October include the refurbishment of classrooms, building some new toilets, and levelling the football and netball pitches – and all in two weeks…! Watch this space for more information over the next few weeks – and be sure to keep up with the news on our Facebook pages for developments on this and other projects. And of course – if you would like to donate or take part in a future ABCD Project – just get in touch!
